Blast From the Past

I am making my way to Cambridge today…and it will start what should be an eventful (and interesting) weekend. I will fill you all in as most of these things happen but let’s just say it involves a number of dinner reservations, a day out and about with T’s dad, a special birthday celebration, and a potluck dinner. Maybe more? Maybe less? Only time will tell. Either way, I am sure there will be plenty of interesting things to write about as well as some pictures to share.
Last night as I was searching for a quick place to eat I ran into an old friend from high school, actually my best friend from high school who I last saw at his wedding in 2002. I spent most of the evening looking at pictures of his 20 month old child and talking about our old high school years. What a small world…and I’m glad I ventured out to grab a quick bite and eventually run into CJ rather than stick with my book and a drink as originally planned.
CJ is now the Assistant Director of Emergency Management for a large county in New Jersey. He is happily married and now has a new son added to his family. He is happy and working hard at a job he enjoys. He asked lots of questions about me, all of which I answered honestly. After he showed me pictures of his baby, I showed him pictures of mine (T) and shared with him that journey to where I am today. He was not surprised (most people are not!) and was genuinely interested in my relationship and our future plans of starting a family.
In high school we were best friends since his new arrival November of our freshman year. He came from military school and had a cast on his left arm. I remember that clearly. His father is a retired FBI agent and his mother is a paramedic. He followed in their footsteps and has been in public service ever since. In school we shared many of the same classes by design and grew to dislike the same people – I guess that’s what made us good friends!
Last night he sat across from me and ate dinner, talking about his journey with his wife and now their son. We have both aged (he more than I) but still laugh heartily at the foolishness we both perpetrated in high school. Some things will never change. We exchanged numbers and e-mail addresses as we did the last time we reconnected and promised to keep in touch…just as we had in 2002 when we last spoke. This time will be different.
On a different note, not sure what type of weather to expect as I have been through three different climates in the same amount of days. Very warm weather in DC (80’s) followed by cooler climates in Jersey (60’s) and now the potential for even colder weather in Cambridge (50’s). Luckily I over packed as usual so I am ready for whatever temperature range I will face. Lots of rain for the northeast, so the drive from AC to Cambridge will be a wet one…can’t wait to just relax in the apartment with T and prepare for an eventful weekend!
I know my last few entries have not followed the usual (lengthy and descriptive) style I share but I figure that a little is better than nothing at all. The traveling around and spotty internet connection in Atlantic City has prompted me to be brief and to the point, something that may equate to boring or be a good start and challenge for me….so I promise a return to the Gogolody you all know, love, and admire once I get to Cambridge and can use some of the photos I have taken. Trust me, there will be plenty more to write about! Please hang in there.
